I have a copy of this Anniversary edition and it is great. This is a beautiful edition. When I first saw the 50th anniversary edition of "The Hobbit", I assumed it was essentially identical to the green 'leather-like' edition that is out there. It wasn't until I got my own copy of the gold edition that I saw it contained a Forward by Christopher Tolkien that was not in the other edition.

The Forward includes a reproduction of the 'sole page that survives today of the original draft of the first chapter, An Unexpected Party' as well as six additional early illustrations. It was very interesting reading about how Tolkien started writing the story of "The Hobbit" how he continued the work, his interaction with Allen & Unwin (the original publishers), all the way through the start of his work on "The Lord of the Rings". By the way, did you know that Gandalf was originally named 'Bladorthin', and the name 'Gandalf' was used for the head of the dwarves (Thorin).

If you are interested in purchasing a copy of this edition, I can probably get you one for about $64.00 (plus shipping) if you can give me a week or two. Please e-mail me at Alex@Doskey.com and request the Gold 50th Anniversary Edition of "The Hobbit". I will be glad to answer any questions you have about this edition or anything else you need to know.
